Executive coaching does help to a certain degree, this is where you learn the rope of the job, the important point, the pitfalls, etc. However, executive coaching is very general in nature, but, it will provide you a general idea and concept, it is actually a road map. It will not help you when you are doing the nitty gritty details of the job.
Hands on work, is the application of this road map. This is where your creativity is needed. You can create your own system, procedure and etc., to get the desired result. It will give you actual knowledge of the job.
Of course you can learn the job through working hands on, but this is where you will do a lot of trial and errors, before you can actually get the result you needed. Sometimes you get stymied and do not meet deadlines, if this happens your job performance is affected.
To answer your questions “work” and executive coaching goes hand in hand in improving employees job performance.
